Three companies. One family name.
What started as a single Mississippi operation in 1941 has grown into a consortium of three specialized companies — each built to handle a different piece of the infrastructure process, and each still run with the same family accountability it started with.
- 1941
Jesse James Ferguson, 16, founded his sand and gravel business, JJ Ferguson, in Mississippi, laying the groundwork for what would become a multi-generation family business.
- Est. Sand & Gravel, inc.
The company grows to over 600 employees, 400 trucks, and multiple asphalt, ready-mix, and gravel plants across Mississippi, at one point also operating as an asphalt contractor.
- Est. Prestress Precast Co.
JJ Ferguson evolves from general road and materials work into a specialized manufacturer of prestressed concrete beams, becoming a producer member of PCI Gulf South.
- 2005
After 64 years at the helm, Jesse James Ferguson passes away. Longtime friends and employees Rocky and Shannon Steen purchase the company; Rocky becomes President and refocuses the business on prestressed beams, selling off the asphalt division.

Rocky Steen passes away. Former Vice President Christy Powell leads the company through the transition that follows. Later, Shannon Steen steps into the role of owner and President, carrying the family legacy into its next chapter.

Headquartered on Highway 82 in Greenwood, Mississippi, JJ Ferguson employs around 110 people and is the leading supplier and transporter of prestressed concrete beams for bridges across Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas — with three of Steen’s children now working in the business.
